A Remote Oasis Outside of Melbourne

The bold, regionally-inspired design, which features a pitched roof, exposed trusses, deep eaves and tall chimneys sits comfortably within its surroundings, grounded through the extensive use of locally-sourced materials. The angled floorplan of the cabin helps to soften the external appearance, while positioning each room to capture uninhibited views of the hillside below.

Thoughtfully designed as a multi-functional residence, two separate family wings – each with a living room and two en-suite bedrooms – are connected by a shared kitchen and dining space orientated toward the Cathedral mountain range. The minimalistic kitchen boasts ultra-luxe amenities, including an electric built-in oven, gas cooktop, and a wine + beverage cooler. Design elements like Caesarstone quartz, glossy Masia tile, and soft gray shaker-style cabinetry complement the adjoining dining area to align with the team’s vision of a versatile space with no constricting details.

The design scheme emphasizes raw materials throughout, including an exterior chimney composed of natural Jindera dry stone, an elegant powder room featuring volcanic Bluestone tile, and Blackbutt timber, which was also used heavily for both interior exposed beams and exterior posts and cladding. Soft, boutique furnishings with natural textures and earthy tones complement the panoramic views, while a large, wrap-around veranda overlooks a sunken fire pit that connects the property to its rural setting.

Wide timber floorboards mark the transition from the stone entrance hallway into an open floorplan entertainment space with pitched ceilings and fully-glazed gable elevation.

The two spacious living rooms, each featuring a handcrafted flint fireplace, also benefit from large openings that provide views across the veranda, while a single window beside the fireplace frames a more intimate glimpse of the landscape beyond.

The team’s vision for a charming getaway lodge has resulted in an impressive, yet modest country cabin that remains true to its rural setting. Through beautiful detailing, thoughtful spatial planning and refined materiality, this property celebrates craftsmanship, nature and luxurious living.
