The approval process varies greatly depending on the amount of proposed construction and how much it will affect the property’s original look.

In most cases, strictly interior work can qualify for an expedited certificate and can be approved initially within 7-10 days. Exterior work, that’s not visible from public thoroughfare and doesn’t drastically affect historic features, can be approved typically within 6-12 weeks. Keep in mind, proposed exterior changes require detailed drawings, an outline of construction methods, and site visits from the LPC staff.

For major alterations, particularly to a property’s exterior, a public hearing in front of the LPC will be required for approval.
